This is where granite completely wins. It formed under intense heat deep underground, so it handles hot temperatures without flinching. You can take a hot baking sheet straight out of the oven and set it right on the stone without a worry. It will not melt, burn, or crack.

Quartz cannot handle that direct heat. The stone minerals inside are tough, but the resin binders holding them together will scorch or discolor if they get too hot. Placing a hot pot directly on quartz can leave a permanent ring or cause thermal shock that cracks the slab. You have to use trivets or hot pads every single time.

You also have to think about the Boise sun. We get incredible sunlight here, and many local homes feature big windows to let that light flood in. Granite holds its color flawlessly under direct sunlight. Quartz can struggle over time; intense afternoon sun blasting through west-facing windows can cause the resins inside the quartz to slowly yellow or fade over the years.
